Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage. Truth and courage aren't always comfortable, but they're never weakness - Brene Brown
For some of us, practicing yoga is about physical progression, getting stronger and more flexible, moving with intention, mind, body and breath as one. It might be about sweating on the mat through challenging asanas, or about finding stress relief through meditation practice.
We are all different and yoga is intuitive to your individuality, some of us may not wish to explore the spiritual side deeper, we may have different belief systems, maybe you're a beginner, or not yet at that point in your practice. The reasons above are more than enough for you to seek, and take what you need to enjoy and enhance your wellbeing.
Some days when I practice I am purely connected to what my body needs, tuning in to any tight muscles or hips and my thoughts are simply, how much I need to stretch right now!
Through daily practice though, I have found an emotional connection and awareness naturally develop.
If you've never taken the time to explore or think about the emotional and spiritual side of your practice, but have felt feelings surface through, for example, heart opening backbends, or a meditation, I highly recommend you take a look into deepening your practice.
I've felt personal enrichment during the time on my mat. Opening up and facing my vulnerabilities during my practice, has allowed me to explore my boundaries.
Connecting to my emotions through breath and movement, continues to to be the most fulfilling, sometimes scary, and unexpected journey to understanding myself, on a deeper level than ever before.
I never anticipated such strong emotive reactions within my practice, but it is a gift I welcome wholeheartedly, both on and off the mat.
Staying open to let whatever emotion comes during the time on my mat, has opened up a heightened awareness of the world around me.
Naturally, I've become curious about this! I've read that by some this is called polymorphously sensuous, meaning, to have an enhanced appreciation of life around you, of your place in this universe and to feel it.
It's true, through my practice I do feel life running through every part of me. My senses fully engaged with the living world. It's a wonderful, liberating and unexpected sensation of pure joy from feeling whole.
There is an amazing, sweet newness, experiencing the world when you're open to being vulnerable.
Let come what comes, let go what goes. See what remains.- Ramana Maharshi
On the yoga mat, the asanas I avoid are the ones I need the most. They will take practice, commitment and resilience. I will fall and get back up again, and again, and again, learning a little more about myself every time, pushing through all the frustrations and self doubt that comes with this.
I will endeavour to stay open hearted and vulnerable as I move and breathe into unchartered territory and feel for my place in this living world.
May you find what you need for yourself through yoga, be open of mind and heart. Your journey is beautifully unique to you, as mine is to me. Namaste.
Be kind and go with the flow
