The motivation to start a fitness journey is different for everyone. For me, it happened four years ago in 2017. The moment arrived like a bolt of lightning out of the blue, but several dots had to join up for that lightning bolt to strike!
A big dose of mid-forties reality suddenly hit me...BOOM! It was a shock, and not a pleasant one, everything was slowing down, my energy levels, my metabolism. I was in a rut. Not exercising, not thinking about my health now or for my future self. I felt I wanted to change, but I didn’t really know how or where to start.
A few months later there was a throw away comment that someone made to me and in that moment, I thought "You're right!"
It was 80 degrees outside, and I was covered up from my neck to my feet, with long sleeves, not even sandals on, very much like a Victorian, if you will! “YES”, I agreed, "It was a shame I was all covered up" This comment made me question, why was I starting to hide myself away?
The answer... lack of CONFIDENCE
Nine surgeries in eight years for vocal problems had affected me, and at times my confidence had been low... when no sound comes out when you try to speak, you stop speaking!
My son was seven years old and I wanted to be able to keep up with him, to join in with his adventures. I also wanted to be a good role model for him, to lead an active life.
The photo below is the day I decided to change it up, I had my first meeting with Brendan @rawmotionfitness, who would become my PT. Once the decision was made to take control, to move, to push myself out of my comfort zone my mind was set....
Yep, it was scary as hell at first. Lots of self-doubt, self criticism and terror when I stepped into a gym.... but it is the best thing I have ever done for myself.
Last year, I qualified as a Children's Fitness Instructor. I am so passionate about the positivity fitness can have on your mental and physical health.
During the year of 2020 COVID came and changed the way we've had to live. Having to adapt my gym workouts to a home environment was frankly difficult for me. I had dabbled with yoga over the years, but it never found a permanent place in my heart.
Then, during lockdown eight months ago I found yoga, or maybe it found me. I feel it came into my life when it was supposed to. I have practised almost daily since then. I am all in. It enriches every aspect of my mind, body and soul. It’s always there for me, all I have to do is show up on my mat, with an open heart and mind. I am so grateful for this.
Finding 'your why' is the start. It may be a specific goal, for health reasons or maybe a big event, like a wedding or a milestone birthday, or it could just be lots of small things that add up!
We all start from where we are.
Whatever it is that makes you want to feel healthier, stronger, have more energy, raise your confidence, build resilience and have fun (yes, that does happen!), remember it, write it down and keep it close to heart. It will be there to inspire you when you need it.
It all adds up to your motivation, your reason, your WHY.
Look for it, use it, its powerful, beautiful & unique to you.
Be kind and go with the flow.
