When you find yourself in the thickness of pursuing a goal or dream, stop only to rest. Momentum builds success – Suzy Kassam
Positivity. Think it, believe it, achieve it. This is a powerful affirmation, and I have found so much truth in it. You know, we come into the world and we leave this world alone, and during our lives there will be events and challenges that shake us and test our resilience, self-esteem, positivity and health. Stresses and battles every day that we strive to win within ourselves.
If we are lucky, we are surrounded by people who love us and support us, but at the end of the day if you want to change something fundamental within yourself, you are the one who has to make it happen.
This is especially so during your fitness journey. You make it happen. You have the power. Your head just needs to be in the right place. Staying focussed and having a positive mindset are qualities I’ve found to be so important for my wellbeing as I continue on my own journey.
As we are now more than a year on living through and adapting to a pandemic, on a scale none of us have experienced before, its mental effects may well leave scars or heartbreakingly much worse for some.
I, like most of us, remain optimistic that our lives will become freer in the near future. As restrictions are removed, excitement and elation are not as prominent as I thought they would be. A feeling of general exhaustion alongside immense relief and ‘what now?’ overshadow the feelings of bliss I thought I would feel.
From talking with others, I understand I am not alone feeling mixed emotions. Friends and colleagues talk of feeling tired, anxious, and underwhelmed while others feel stress escalating as the pressure of having to socialize again becomes a reality as the world slowly opens its doors.
Momentum in every part of our daily lives has been interrupted repeatedly in the last twelve months. Christmas 2019, I was the strongest and fittest I have ever been. After two years of consistent strength training, I felt I was starting to level up.
Then 2020 happened. Momentum stalled, as it did for all of us. Yoga was simply my saviour.
As I have embarked on combining my yoga practice with strength training over the last few weeks, momentum has again been interrupted by a niggly lower back strain and this week, a fall onto my left sit bone, has stopped me training as I normally would.
Its mentally tough, not moving my body freely for as long as I want. Seeing my PT today after a week of rest was so needed. A huge thank you to him for helping me train safely today and for talking through how to split my training between yoga and strength based gym work, and for reminding me about the importance of nutrition and recovery. It has got my head in the right place again.
Moving my body today felt so good and makes me very happy!
This is why I love having a PT, their expertise and encouragement is invaluable. I have a plan in place to complement my yoga practice, to gain back all the strength I feel I’ve lost over the last year. Having motivational support is so beneficial, whether it’s a gym or yogi buddy, or friends & family who are in your corner cheering you on, it makes a tangible difference.
However, it is you who turns up each time for yourself, it’s your resilience, your inner strength and you should remember to be proud of that.
Adopt a positive mindset, show up for yourself, enjoy all the good feels of moving your body consistently and momentum will do the rest!
Close your eyes and imagine the best version of you possible. That’s who you really are. Let go of any part of you that doesn’t believe it. – C. ASSAAD
Be kind and go with the flow.
