Taking time to set up a special area for your yoga practice is a really enjoyable thing to do. It sets an intention and commitment to yourself, to embark on a regular practice.
Whatever your level of ability, having a designated space to flow, will enable you to roll out your mat, in an environment that you find practical, peaceful and pleasurable. A place to arrive, and be able to connect to your mind, body and soul.
It doesn't have to be a whole room, (although lucky you if this is the case!) as yoga can be practiced in a small area. It is wonderful if you can flow outside in nature, but this may not be practical all of the time. Hello UK weather!
Personally, I don't have the room to be able to leave my mat out permanently. My yoga space is in our family lounge, but I still enjoy making it special for myself each time I practice.
My family kindly vacate the lounge when I practice at the weekend (most times!) During the week I am an early bird, up at 5am. Practicing in a quiet house, whilst everyone else is dreaming is magical!
Having a routine means I've arrived, I'm relaxed, and mentally open to flow. I'm not distracted, therefore I am in the moment, fully immersed in breathing and moving. It really enhances the effects on my body, both physically and mentally.
Find your space and find your flow
A yoga space should be clutter free, personally, this is my number one priority! It's really nice to have practical and beautiful things here. For each of us this will be different. I love seeing other yogis practice spaces for inspiration.
Items I love to enhance my yoga time are;
My mat
Cushions - for restorative flows & meditation
Blanket
Scented candle
Houseplants
Yoga blocks - you can use books though if you don't have any
Music - enhances all, from the stillness of meditation, to intuitive freedom flows
Enjoy creating your space by choosing items that please you, and relax you. Some examples of things you might like are; houseplants, art or visible mantras, candles and music. Here's my space:
Things to maybe consider for example,
Privacy - windows, family members
Temperature - comfortable, suitable
Lighting - both cosy and sunlight can be beautiful
Sounds - how peaceful is it? would you like music?
Smells - a lot of breathing in yoga, so fresh air, scented candles or a diffuser will enhance your flow
The beautiful reality
Creating a sacred yoga space in your home will enable you to feel at ease and contented when you practice.
Of course, the reality of practicing at home will inevitably bring about interruptions, it's certainly not about perfection!
After all, the ability to be able to hear and absorb the world around us, to acknowledge it, and let it go, is to practice being in the moment, and is at the heart of yoga.
I love my yoga space at home. It's where I feel safe and content. It's a joy every time I roll out my mat, step on to it & inhale. My time. My space. My wellbeing.
Create your yoga space, enjoy it.
Be kind & go with the flow.
